Today as I hiked in the beautiful snowy wonderland of Rocky Mountain National Park, I found myself pondering something I wrote in a post this morning. There I mentioned needing to "balance" the newfound fierceness of bear-energy in my life with the "niceness" I've traditionally been known for. However, as I reflected on this issue while walking out onto a stunningly beautiful Mills Lake, I realized that the "perfectly balanced" person - despite what a psychotherapist might surmise - can actually appear quite boring and more often than not lacks the "juice" of life. It occurred to me that our personalities are actually more colorful when we tend more in one direction or another. For example, others might consider us too intense, too laid-back, too philosophical, too unphilosophical, too driven, too go-with-the-flow, too sensitive, too insensitive, etc., etc. While it is good for us to strive to be more balanced, the truth of the matter is that we will always tend more in one direction than another. Just as a train needs to build up momentum in a single direction and continue on a particular track if it is to go anywhere, so we must tend in a certain direction if we are ever to fulfill our calling and manifest the wisdom contained within our own unique set of traits. The fact that we never "have it all" is actually a blessing in disguise, for it indicates the fact that we have an eternal need for OTHERS to balance out the traits that we don't have. Our perfection is not in being completely balanced within ourselves, but in being a part of a web of life in which one being's strengths make up for another being's weakness, and vice versa. Either ALL of us achieve spiritual maturity or enlightenment, or NONE of us do!
