"Ninth century Celtic theologian John Scotus Eriugena loves to play with words. One such word is the Greek noun for God, 'theos.' It derives, he says, from the Greek word 'theo,' which means to run or flow. God is the Light that flows through all things. It is like a subterranean river running deep in the folds of the universe. Without it there would be no life. The Scottish poet Kenneth While builds on Eriugena's playful interpretation when he speaks of this river at the heart of all things as the 'glow-flow.' What we are called to do, says White, is not just look at the flow nor merely analyze it, but know that we are part of it and dive more deeply into it."
